14 Critical Outsourcing Questions

Is your outsourcing partnership, subcontracted development or other consulting service engagements heading for failure? Review this performance checklist once a quarter to determine if you are at risk.

The greater the number of “yes” answers, the higher the risk of failure.
  1. Actual cost, effort or schedule results deviate from project estimates. No explanation is given for how or why this happened.

  2. Decisions are not made in a timely manner and not communicated to all parties.

  3. Deliverables are incomplete.

  4. Early project milestones were missed.

  5. Overdue action items, issues, and open tasks keep growing.

  6. Performance measurements are not monitored or communicated.

  7. Processes, when defined, are bypassed or do not work efficiently.

  8. Project control data (tracking charts, defects, change management, etc.) is missing or non-existent.

  9. Project reviews do not take place.

  10. Requested requirements are not implemented and no explanation is given.

  11. Requirements that were never requested are implemented.

  12. Staff assigned are not qualified or replaced frequently.

  13. Status reports are late, contain little progress information, or does not match the information heard in person from project team members.

  14. Vendor is not actively monitoring or managing relationships between you and other 3rd parties.
