Critical PM Success Factors
By Dennis Sommer (www.dennissommer.com)
Why are 70% of technology projects considered failures?
The short answer is; they usually ignore or are unsuccessful
in one or more of the project "Critical Success Factors".
We will take a look at the top 10 critical success factors
for successfully completing a technology or technology
related project. 1.
Commitment of Management and Team
Active management and executive sponsorship. Everyone
must understand the "Price to be Paid".
2. Commitment to Process
Understand that technology is an enabler, not a solution
by itself. Time must be invested to identify the problems
to be solved and correct flaws in the business prior
to doing anything else.
3. Intelligent Use of Technology
Technology must support the business processes, versus
expecting the processes to change to accommodate technology.
4. Assemble the Right Team
Realize these are complex projects and companies must
invest in in-house staff time and outside expertise
if they lack the skills in-house.
5. Take People into Consideration
Realize success is dependant upon the people (end users)
using the system. They must be active participants in
the project.
6. Realize Less can be More
Solve the key problems first. Obtain a quick win to
ensure end user buy-in.
7. Clearly Defined Goals and Benefits
Know why you are involved, what the end results should
be, and what value will be obtained.
8. Detailed Approach and Plan
Follow a best practice approach or methodology that
is proven successful. Work and manage to the plan.
9. Strong Project Management
Project expectations, roles, and responsibilities are
defined and EVERYONE is held accountable.
10. Maintain a Positive Attitude
Do not get frustrated.
